Ozzy Osbourne

Ozzy Osbourne (born John Michael Osbourne, December 3, 1948 in Aston, Birmingham, England) is a singer - former lead vocalist of the pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath - popular solo artist, and former star of the popular reality show The Osbournes.

As a solo artist, Osbourne has sold over 27 million albums in the US. Two albums, Blizzard of Ozz (1980) and No More Tears (1991), are certified quadruple platinum, for sales of over 4 million copies in the US.

Former schoolmate, Tony Iommi, would discover Osbourne, inviting him to play with his budding group, the Polka Tulk Blues Band (later renamed Earth). Impressed by his unique singing style Osbourne was asked to join.

During this time psychedelic rock was enormously popular. To distinguish themselves from the norm, Iommi and his partners decided to play a heavy blues inspired style of music laced with gloomy lyrics. On learning the name Earth was currently in use, the group appropriately re-named themselves Black Sabbath, after a song Ozzy wrote.
